Program Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must be enrolled at UNLV
  • Maintain required GPA standards
  • Pass a criminal background investigation
  • Must be able to meet physical and mental requirements of the position

What Cadets Do

  • Conduct campus patrols
  • Assist with safety escorts
  • Support special events on university property

  • Assist officers with low-threat service calls

Student Cadet FAQs

The Student Cadet Program provides UNLV students with an opportunity to assist the University Police Department in supporting campus safety operations. Cadets help supplement the uniformed patrol division in low-threat situations such as campus patrols, events on university property, safety escorts, and other public safety support services.

Cadets gain exposure to public safety operations while continuing their academic studies.

Student Cadets assist with a variety of campus safety functions, including:

  • Conducting patrols of university property
  • Assisting with campus events and special events
  • Providing walking safety escorts
  • Supporting patrol officers with public safety services
  • Assisting with general campus safety operations

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
  • Be currently enrolled at UNLV
  • Pass a criminal background investigation

Student Cadets must remain actively enrolled and maintain academic standing.

Enrollment requirements include:

  • Undergraduate students: minimum of 6 credit hours per semester
  • Graduate or professional students: minimum of 5 credit hours per semester

Students must also maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

International students must meet additional enrollment requirements established by International Student Services.

Cadets should be prepared for a work environment that may include:

  • Standing or walking for extended periods
  • Moderate physical activity
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Exposure to environmental elements such as heat, wind, rain, dust, or noise

Cadets must be able to meet the physical and mental demands required to safely perform their duties.

Cadets work under the direction of the Cadet Supervisor, Patrol Supervisors, and the Events Lieutenant, depending on their assigned duties and operational needs.
