Who are Campus Security Authorities?

Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) are individuals whose positions or responsibilities fall within one or more categories established under the Clery Act.

CSAs may include:

• Officials with significant responsibility for student and campus activities
• Members of a campus police or security department
• Individuals who have responsibility for campus security
• Individuals or offices designated by an institution to receive crime reports

How Does Someone Become a CSA?

• CSA responsibilities are generally based on an individual’s role or job duties within the institution.
• Institutions identify positions that meet the Clery Act definition of a Campus Security Authority.
• An employee does not typically volunteer or sign up to become a CSA.
• Individuals identified as CSAs should receive information or training regarding their Clery Act reporting responsibilities.
• If you have been identified as a CSA by your institution, use the CSA Crime Reporting Form to submit reportable crime information.

CSA Responsibilities

• If someone tells you about a crime or an incident that might be a crime, you must report it to your institution’s designated office or an official responsible for collecting Clery report information.
• Share the information as related by the person.
• When in doubt, report.
• Tell the person who disclosed the crime to you that you must share the information.
• Help connect the person to available options and resources within the institution.

Information to Share

• Date, time, and location of the incident
• Date and time the incident was reported to you
• Description of the nature of the incident
• Identities of individuals involved, including known suspects and witnesses (although not required)

CSAs should be familiar with the campus contacts and resources available when receiving or reporting information about a crime.
